Winter Swells & Chill Vibes: Surfing Westport in the Off-Season
Embrace the Cold
While most pack up their boards after Labor Day, the real ones know—winter is when Westport comes alive in its rawest, most rewarding form. The crowds thin, the waves thicken, and the crisp ocean air hits different. If you've never experienced the off-season magic, it might be time to zip up your 5/4 wetsuit and lean in.
Why Surf Westport in Winter?
Consistent Swells: Winter storms bring in some of the most consistent and powerful waves of the year. Ideal for surfers looking to challenge themselves or level up.
Uncrowded Lineups: No jostling for position. Just you, a couple locals, and a whole lot of ocean.
Nature in Full Force: Sea mist, stormy skies, and moody light make for unforgettable sessions
What You Need to Know Before You Go
Gear Up Right: A 5/4 wetsuit with a hood, gloves, and booties is essential. While Rough Bar Surf Shack is closed for the winter, our friends at LOGE Camps Westport have you covered for rentals.
Check the Conditions: Surfline's Westport surf report is your best friend. Look for mid-tide push, light winds, and a solid NW swell.
Respect the Locals: The winter crew is small and seasoned. Be cool, share waves, and you’ll fit right in.
Want to Improve Your Surf Game?
Our summer coach Aaron Miles (@PNWPOVsurfer) is a local from Ocean Shores. Hit him up on Instagram to see if he's around for a winter session. Whether you’re refining your pop-up or learning to read a tricky swell, Aaron’s the guy.
Where to Warm Up After
Whale of a Cone: Espresso, snacks, and ice cream (yep, even in winter) plus a stash of video and board games to defrost with.
Sea Birds Candy and Gifts: Snag a new hoodie and support a year-round Westport staple.
